From July 18 to July 22 Barcelona hosts the third edition of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF 2008), organised by Euroscience and hosted by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació - FCRI). The ESOF is held every second year, hosted by major science cities in Europe - Stockholm in 2004 and Munich in 2006. The Forums are international and interdisciplinary meetings of scientists, young researchers, politicians, policy-makers, innovators, business people, media and communicators. Its mission is to provide both the European and the international science and business communities with an open platform for debate and communication. It presents and profiles Europe's leading research trends in the sciences, humanities and social sciences. The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) participates in this event with a presentation of the Director of International Relations, Dr. Carles Antón. This speech will be devoted to the social impact of next-generation communication systems.

Nowadays, the so-called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) turn out to be a cornerstone of our society. Using a mobile phone, browsing the Internet or finding our way with a GPS receiver are activities which have become part of our daily life. Surprisingly, the general public is barely aware of the physical principles underpinning those technologies or their potential applications. This, not only makes the digital divide even wider but, also, leads to a less knowledgeable society. This situation definitely calls for immediate reaction in terms of knowledge dissemination and training activities.

In the proposed Outreach Activity, the physical principles, the operation and the different building blocks of a number of communication systems and infrastructures will be briefly described. Special attention will be paid to mobile and wireless communications, satellite-based positioning and communication systems and optical networks. A short overview of the evolution of mobile communications during the last two decades and its impact on the size of the user terminal and its capabilities, the evolution of fixed communication networks, recent trends and some insight on the evolution of those technologies and communication networks in the coming years will be also given. Some illustrative examples on how communication technologies work and their applications will be presented as well. For instance, what happens after dialing a phone number? How can voice or data be transmitted over a wireless link? How do positioning systems, such as GPS, compute the location of users?
