The Institute of Photonic Sciences

The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) is a foundation created by UPC and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, through the Department of Universities, Research and Information Society (DURSI). The institute focuses on basic and applied research, teaching and the promotion of the industrial sector in the field of light sciences and all disciplines influenced by photonics, such as optoelectronics and optical nanotechnologies, information technologies, health and life sciences, quantum information sciences and laser systems.

The ICFO provides an international solution to the need for research and third cycle education in the field of photonics. It also works towards the industrial application and promotion of spin-off companies (created to develop ideas that arise during research) by researchers and students. The Institute also works with capital risk agencies and intends to take part in company incubators and the organisation of national and international scientific meetings.
